Everything wrong with Discord

Discord uses the Google cloud for their infrastructure. Google’s cloud services are known to collect data and use them for “tailored advertisements” or to put it in other words: to spy on the users.

Google is still in the PRISM program (and I don’t think the NSA would ever stop) and would still spy on Discord users (as Discord runs their platform on Google Cloud services):

Also data of Discord users can be used for ads by Google no matter which way Google demands this data. It’s not like Google won’t use this data for ads, they really enjoy collecting data. They basically own Discord’s infrastructure and Discord also stated below that they can use your personal data for any purpose at any time and sending them to any company or person as seen below.

Discord also uses Cloudflare which collects a massive amount of data and acts as a man-in-the-middle proxy to do so.

Once you uploaded an image to their network it’s automatically theirs and like Facebook under a license which allows them to use this data for any purpose.

“By uploading, distributing, transmitting or otherwise using Your Content with the Service, you grant to us a perpetual, nonexclusive, transferable, royalty-free, sublicensable, and worldwide license to use, host, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, and display Your Content […]”

Proprietary games and Discord Nitro (which is their premium membership) can be shopped through Discord and they only accept credit cards or PayPal.

(Looks like they only sell games to Nitro subscribers now)

And we all know that credit cards and PayPal are not an anonymous way to pay. Essentially I wouldn’t support a multi-billion dollar company in the five eyes selling a proprietary software to you and your data as seen below.

Discord threatens you to remove access to special features and is actively insisting with psychological measures to keep paying your premium membership.

These perks are somehow mandantory, because even 8MB isn’t a reasonable upload limit if you have to send e.g. project files for collaborative work.

Discord sends you E-mails and is reminding you in their client to re-subscribe to Discord Nitro with a big yellow banner and a broken motorcycle. They really want you to re-subscribe. And if that’s not enough they are sending you also notifications in their client. I’ve been through this process too as like I said had an account there and it was making me kinda uncomfortable not having Discord Nitro.

Discord’s privacy policy also states that they have the right to use your data for any purpose even for telling you what you do on their platform to the FBI or any other governmental institution.

https://discordapp.com/terms (again)
“Data We Collect Automatically: When you interact with us through the Services, we receive and store certain information such as an IP address, device ID, and your activities within the Services. We may store such information or such information may be included in databases owned and maintained by affiliates, agents or service providers. The Services may use such information and pool it with other information to track, for example, the total number of visitors to our Site, the number of messages users have sent, as well as the sites which refer visitors to Discord.”

Also since Discord is a multi-billion dollar corporation located in the five eyes it is obvious that they somehow have to work with the government (they are kind of a big deal in the VoIP field for Skype-like communication, almost a monopoly, especially for the younger generation).

Also another reference that data has been shared with governmental institutions:

Discord apparently got help from the FBI to “censor” their platform.
